The Figas, also called mano figa, are rich in history. The gesture of the thumb protruded between the pointer finger and middle finger has a variety of different meanings dating back nearly 8,000 years. But the specific symbolism that gave rise to the charm that we refer to as a Mano Figa originates in Etruscan Italy. The placement of the thumb between the fingers is undeniably a reference to sex. In ancient times it was worn as an incantation to The Goddess, a call for fertility and virility (the fig also has close ties to Bacchus). Through time and colonization, the symbol crossed the oceans with Christianity, and beginning in the early 17th century figas began to be produced in South America. Nowadays they are worn throughout South America as a ward against the evil eye.

This tiny figa hand charm is the perfect little talisman to add to your favorite layered look, or worn alone as a simple and pretty everyday necklace. Available in oxidized sterling with white topaz and sterling silver with blue sapphire.
